An interactive example with fictional data. Change the date to see how the report handles transfers, gaps, and overlapping records.
A current-owner lookup cannot answer a historical question. This sample checks which ownership period applies and flags records with missing or conflicting information.
Try May 31, June 1, and July 1, 2025. June 1 is a transfer boundary; July 1 reveals a gap.

start_date <= reporting_date
AND (end_date > reporting_date OR end_date IS NULL)
1 match → report the owner
0 matches → flag a gap
2+ matches → flag overlap; withhold ownerThe day a transfer starts belongs to the new interval. Counting matches first prevents overlapping histories from becoming duplicate report rows or an arbitrary owner selection.
Agree on transfer-date meaning with the data owner, check source completeness and invalid intervals, reconcile representative histories, and test performance on the actual schema. This sample uses dates, not timestamps.
